Sometimes it's the videos that are great:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7P2xTxCS_Q&feature=related

And sometimes it's the comments:
"he sings like a girl with man clothes going to the prom???????"

(I also must quibble with the narration at the end. This particular song was not written by Martyn; it was a translation from a grisly old German children's book.)

Tickets are all sold out, so if you didn't get yours, stay at home and cry all your make-up off.

Anyone interested can meet at Lucky 13, down the block, after 6:30 for drinks.

Doors at 7, show at 7:30, and I don't think there's an opening band.

I was glad it was such an early show (I don't like having to sit through 4 opening bands and have the headliner go on at midnight), but now I'm frazzled because I actually have a job. It might be one of those run-out-of-the-house, do-my-face-in-the-cab, paint-my-nails-at-the-bar kind of night.

But who cares -- it's the Tiger Lillies!!

October 30th, at the Swedish Hall, upstairs from Cafe du Nord.

I've never been to the Swedish Hall. Is it a wide-open space, or is there seating?

Nothing can compare to Bimbo's, sadly. I love that place.

But still: I can't wait!

.... is my newest most prized posession. Thank you, Scott! Knowing it came all the way from Munich makes it all the more precious.

It makes me furious and petulant that they didn't do this production in SF. It sounds incredible!

And Jesus Lord, the saw-playing on "The Fire" is enough to make me swoon. It's SO smooth, and SO seamless.

Gotta go practice.

The Little Matchgirl

I didn't mention this before because I didn't want to jinx my chances at seeing the Tiger Lillies. I happen to be in Munich for a month and they happen to be performing a few nights at one of the christmas markets.

Last night, I saw their production of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Matchgirl". What can I say? It was all so beautiful that I was actually verklemnt. The band was stage right dressed in deep red velvet suits with top hats. Stage left was a small rundown apartment set with three young women dressed as chimneysweeps playing violin, viola and cello. In the middle were a set of cascading stages, each getting progressively higher and smaller.

The only players were the girl and her father, but the variations they went through (including, at one point exchanging clothes and playing out their opposite roles). The music wasn't as raucous as I expected, but the show was being billed as for 12 and older. That just meant they had to make up for it with lyrics that rip your heart out and play that against the action unfolding (which sometimes doesn't fit the words making it seem like a play for kids, but not really).

I guess it wasn't for everyone because people had the gall to leave in the middle of the show which meant they had to pass in front of the stage for all to see. After the fourth couple passed the band, Martyn expressed his opinion, by continuing to play accordion with one hand, falsely smiling wide, and wildly waving them good-bye. The rest of us clapped and cheered.

From start to finish, it was just wonderful. For the ending, it seemed like they were going to pull out some kind of happy ending. If you know the story of the matchgirl, you know she freezes to death, but the idea is that she might be happy in heaven. Well, as they are wrapping up the "happy in heaven" bit, the girl makes a final act that had someone in the audience behind me saying, "O, ne!". It was a right proper Tiger Lillies ending.

So afterwards, I approached the band telling them that I came all the way from San Francisco to see them and now they need to go to San Francisco. They blamed their agent for the east coast only bookings. Martyn said one of his favorite shows was at Bimbos and proclaimed "Next year for sure!". They were good natured about it so maybe with some extra writing to the agent there's a chance.

As penance for this bit of bragging, the first person in the San Francisco Bay Area to reply gets a copy of The Little Matchgirl CD to be delivered sometime after Dec 29th when I get back.

Death and the Bible

I'll admit it: my Tiger Lillies library is not complete. I first discovered them through "Shockheaded Peter" and have been adding albums randomly, one by one, some old, some new. My most recent acquisition is "Death and the Bible," which was released in 2001.

Wow. I think this is the ultimate busker's album. The use of all the flotsam-and-jetsam percussion, including what sounds like bike horns and rubber ducks, the not-very-fancy-possibly-out-of-tune ukulele, the harmonica, the saw, combined with the gorgeous, filthy lyrics .... My god, "Strawberry Jam" alone is a busker's paradise.

The Tiger Lillies is like the most awesome band I wish I could ever see in a BART station. Of course, if I ever had, I'd have lost my job because I'd have sit, enraptured, watching them for as long as they played, giving them my last dime and forgetting to go to work.

So what the hell is up with that half assed North American tour?
I mean I'm a forgiving sort, but I don't want to be an enabler.
They did say next year for sure, but can I trust these Brits, perhaps it just a crafty ruse to lead me on.

- - - - - -

I've done some calculations, ya know, drew some graphs, and stuff.
I'm pretty sure that if you enjoy The Tiger Lillies, you'll like Doug Stanhope's standup.

He's been at the SF Punchline all this week, still has 4 more shows (2 Friday 17th and 2 Saturday 18th).

Imagine, if you will, that Bill Hicks, George Carlin, and Sam Kinison had a wild threesome and miraculousy produced offspring. buy why not utilize the Google and learn yourself somethin, it's Friday and your probably at work.
Has anyone seen this? Kelly got it from Netflix, not realizing it was the same program we saw a few months ago on Bravo. It has some awesome interviews with the band, and footage of songs from "Shockheaded Peter," although, sadly, not from the show itself. "Flying Robert" never fails to make me cry.

If you live in the East Bay or thereabouts, you MUST check out 5 Cent Coffee on Thursday at the Starry Plough. Not only do they occasionally bust out a Tiger Lillies cover, but Miss Doodlz LaRue had the absolute gumption to take her melodeon into a Tiger Lillies show and have it autographed by the men themselves!

I love this band. Bluesy, boozy, heartbreaking tunes, on uke, melodeon, stand-up bass, washboard, and recently, a 30-lb chunk of galvanized metal chain.

From Mister Five Cent Coffee Himself:

"Hey Kids,

That's right, you heard me. This Thursday September 21st, strap on yer rubber underwear with the matching ducky suspenders and come on down to the Starry Plough!

Experience the terrific bluegrass duo Hollertown!

and then...

Drink up every drop of the cheap musical stylings of 5 Cent Coffee! Ukulele driven, grumpy hat wearin' , washboard slingin' dirty old songs that only Slick McCoy, Doodles LaRue and Smitty "Spitshine" DeLaCroix can dole out...

Be there!

Here's the detailed info:

My co-workers and I were discussing accordians yesterday, so today I thought I'd bring in some Tiger Lillies for us to enjoy. I brought in "Circus Songs" because it's my favorite and the language is pretty work-safe.

My co-workers were less than trhrilled. "Is this opera?" asked the lady from the billing department. "Did he just say 'pimp'?" asked the naive 23-year-old. "This woman has a really wierd voice," remarked one of the salesmen.

...sigh...

Lawrence mentioned in a previous thread about how singing in falsetto for fifteen years may have taken a toll on Martyn's voice. I think he's right.

I'm listening to "The Brothel to the Cemetery," released in 1998, and Martyn's voice is completely smooth, without hitches, without roughness. The later releases feature a voice that, while still absolutely incredible and one of the most riveting singing voices I've ever heard, has a rough edge to it, as if it could break or falter at any moment. He seems to have such incredible control that when the voice DOES break, it's entirely on purpose, but I am wondering if he can maintain that voice forever.

Hearing Martyn sing in his "real" voice was so very odd... as if it was a facade, a persona. It was as if I was seeing him without makeup.

circus/ exotic performers needed

Ok heres the gig, its a little confusing. I am head of a video game/comic design company called Army of Mayhem. This summer we threw an art and music festival called 10 Acre Takeover and it was a hit. What we'd like to do next is make our characters come alive. One of the main characters is a necromancer in a nomadic traveling circus of experiments gone wrong. This is the troop. Once we cast the show, we will make all the costumes and necessary eye candy needed. The show is January 13th I believe (give or take a day) at the Key Club in Hollywood. The circus act will be an opener for Dr. Steel (www.doctorsteel.com) (www.myspace.com/drsteel) The Doctor has the club all to himself that night. This band is comlete with the doctor, henchmen musicans, sexy nurses and puppet show. This show is going to be big. Lots and lots of big name reps coming as well as special guest recruiters from Blue Man Group who are looking for 'a new act'. I am almost certain the place will sell out, Dr Steel has only had 2 shows and the last was was so packed the venue had to turn people away. If all goes well and everyone has fun, you are invited to join us to do it again at comicon San Diego where costumes will be entered into the contest and cash prizes are given. This is just for fun.... but everyone involved are serious about their art. Dr Steel alone requires 12 people to run the show. If youre interested in meeting with other telented artists like yourself and performing ,we would love for you to join us. Army of Mayhem currently does not make profit as we are still in the process of creating our work, however everyone works for free and we love the barter system. For example.. if you need photos done, and a makeupartist to do shots for you, we can get that done. We're all artists trying to help other artists. If you have any comments, concerns, let me know.

I chopped it up into tracks and tagged it if anybody is interested. I can load it up to a server and send out the link. The radio show files are all public so I don't believe we'd be breaking any rules (even though that can be fun and all).

I was going to do the same to the other interviews and such around but haven't gotten to it. Need more Slack.

musical saw, Part 2

My saw: a basic 26 inch Stanley. Couldn't find a longer one. Maybe someday.

My bow: a cheap-ass cello bow from e-bay. It's genuine horsehair. I wonder what vegan cellists use: is there a synthetic replacement?

My rosin: Dark brown rosin, encased in a light-brown wooden tray. It reminds me of a fig newton.

Here we go.

[scrape scrape scrape]

Ew. More rosin. Rosin is the lube of the saw-playing world, apparently. Tighten the bow. Put a dishtowel on my lap so I don't eviscerate myself. (One plays saw with the teeth FACING you, in a tender spot.)

Okay. Here we go. S-curve. Rosin. Tighten the bow. Perpendicular. Steady.

[squeeee!!!]

Oh wow, a noise! Cool! It made a noise!

You know what I forgot? My hat. I put on my bowler, and try again.

[squeee-eeee-eeeee-ewewewew]

I'm doing it I'm doing it I'm doing it!

[squeeeee-ewww, ewww, squeeeeee-e-ee-eew]

Oh, this is so cool. I'm gonna try bending the saw after I start a note.

[squeee-ooooohh-oooooh-oooooooooooh!]

Cool! It's making noise! It's doing that waaah-waaah-waaaheeeewewww noise that I love!

Okay. So here I am, with my hat and my saw and my bow and my fig-newton rosin and my saw making spine-tingling spooky noises.

Now what?

How do you go from "Oh my god it's making a SOUND," to "Hey, I'm playing a SONG"?

Any saw-players out there? A few pointers, maybe?

Wondering, learning.

~a.

Last year when I saw the Tiger Lillies at Bimbos, a girl rushed into the bathroom, peed very quickly, rinsed her fingertips under the faucet, and was on her way back out the door when the bathroom matron (you have to love a club that has a bathroom matron) cut her down with this:

"Next time, I'll thank you to use SOAP."

You can bet I washed my hands very thoroughly after THAT exchange.

It's so... gorgeously creepy.

musical saw?

Okay, so I have a total wild hair about trying to learn how to play the saw. The Tiger Lillies, Black Heart Procession, and Mary Anne on Gilligan's Island can do it; why can't I?

Of course, I have no musical talent, and very little patience. Does anyone have any experience with the saw, and can give me some pointers? Does anyone want to go to Home Depot with me and pick out a saw? My understanding is that the cheaper and flimsier the saw, the better....

November 8 in Hollywood, CA

What a magnificent show! The intimacy of the Knitting Factory was a shock, considering last year I saw them at UCLA...such a small crowd, too! Instead of the expected Punch and Judy performance they played a wonderful selection of tunes from most of their works, from SWINE and BANGING IN THE NAILS to Maria and even three off of The Gorey End...ahhh.
The most annoying point for me was when Martyn launched into Send in the Clowns and the tards in the crowd wouldn't stop laughing...oh, yeah, that's a parody, right? Idiots. I love that song because of Martyn's version, always hated it before and I wanted them all dead. That's exactly what I told Martyn along with my gushing praise...sycophant am I! He laughed and said thanks.

Did they play The Learned Pig with the ghost puppet for you guys?

Seen it? Loved it? Hated it?

I saw it yesterday, and am still mulling over its strengths and weaknesses. Visually stunning, yes, but to me there was a kind of dischord between the stark sets and action, and the rumpled, ramshackle charm of Tom Waits' score.

A few years ago, when the Tiger Lillies were in town doing Shockheaded Peter, they were staying in a hotel in my neighborhood.
I ran into Martyn Jacques at the corner market a few times. The first time, I gushed and blubbered about how awesome Shockheaded Peter was, and then helped him figure out how to use the ATM. He was having a little trouble with it.

I walked home on air, completely star-struck....

The Tiger Lillies have announced their U.S. tour dates, and they are playing only five shows in the entire country. Including November 11th at our very own Bimbo's!

If you've seen them before, you know why I'm so thrilled.
If you haven't seen them before, you simply must. Trust me.
